Your Task
Visual artists must submit an original piece of artwork which directly relates to this year's theme. Both digital art (vector art, digital collages, etc) and high-quality photos of physical artwork (paintings, sketches, etc) may be submitted as long as the file size is under 100 MB.
Your artwork will be evaluated on the art marking criteria (see below) and three winning pieces will be selected from the collective pool of student and adult submissions.
You may submit entries with this google form. Alongside an upload of your piece, you must also submit:
- The title of your piece;
- A short explanation of how your piece relates to the theme (180 words maximum);
- Any additional notes you would like to share regarding the creative process, other ideas expressed in your piece, metaphors, etc (if needed).
Themes
We have created two themes - one for the student division, and one for the adult division. All submissions must relate to the theme for their respective division.
Student theme: Through the Eyes of our Youth
As young people, we experience a colorful kaleidoscope of emotions as we navigate through the transitional phase from childhood to adulthood. At a time meant for self-discovery and identity building, we might find ourselves caught up in the constant expectations surrounding us — the intense academic pressure, the suffocating social norms and the influence of social media's curated versions of reality.
The stigma surrounding mental health and speaking up makes it challenging to give authentic expression to the full spectrum of our feelings. Just like the emotions in "Inside Out," our inner experiences are a vibrant landscape. Whether it be Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust, or Anxiety, Ennui, Nostalgia, and Embarrassment, validating and expressing our emotions is crucial for our mental well being and fostering greater self-awareness.
OneMind is hosting an art contest for youth to creatively share their mental health journey. Whether through painting, drawing or digital art, depict how you've navigated the many complex emotions—the moments of joy and wonder, as well as the self-doubt, anxiety, and burnout. You can choose to raise awareness of the emotional landscape of the youth that is often unseen and misunderstood or to share your formative journey of self discovery and healing.
The power of art lies in its ability to make the invisible visible and inspire a change. This is your chance to showcase your artistic talents and raise awareness supporting youth mental health. Pick up your art tools and let your inner world come to life!
Adult theme: Metamorphosis
The process of metamorphosis embodies the essence of transformation - a caterpillar's journey into a vibrant butterfly. This transition mirrors the challenges we face in our own lives, as we shed the constraints of our past to unfurl the wings of a maturing self. Whether grappling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or other mental health struggles, these difficulties can feel like a restrictive cocoon. Yet, with care and intention, these very challenges have the power to transform us, allowing us to emerge with a renewed sense of purpose and resilience.
OneMind invites artists to depict this metamorphosis, showcasing how small, consistent steps towards healing can blossom into growth and self-discovery. Imagine a single raindrop striking the surface of a still pond - the ripples it creates gradually grow, eventually reaching the furthest shores. Now imagine this is a raindrop of positivity, how can we ensure this positivity reaches the shore without getting pulled away by the alternating currents in the water? The positivity needs to be channeled, like the ripples navigating the currents. It's thoughts like this that channels growth and success.
By sharing these visual narratives of personal transformation, you'll not only showcase your artistic talents, but also contribute to destigmatizing mental health challenges. The winning artworks will be featured at our upcoming awareness event, where we'll celebrate your insights and commitment to illuminating the profound change possible.
Unleash your vision and help us unveil the power of metamorphosis. Through your art, you can capture the delicate, yet resilient, journey of shedding old skins and embracing the vibrant, liberated self. Together, let's create a space where vulnerability blossoms into understanding, and individual wings catalyze positive change.
